STUDY QUESTIONS

1. What is the prognosis in this case?
2. During the follow-up, what were the manifestations of qi and yin deficiencies?
3. What details warrant attention with regard to the care for this case?

Answers

1. This case was caused by lingering evil heat not being completely eliminated after contracting fulminant wind and invading fever. If it had been originally diagnosed and treated correctly, there would have been a complete, albeit slow, recovery. However, without correct treatment, recovery could be delayed and more yin would be damaged.
2. Upon follow-up, the patient was still experiencing symptoms of vision fatigue, limited reading time and a dry mouth. His tongue was red with a thin yellow coating and his pulse was fast and weak, indicating both qi and yin deficiency.
3. Upon rendering the care for this case, the patient is advised to eat less spicyhot food to prevent heat from injuring yin. Avoid vision fatigue by not staying up late or overusing the eyes. Meanwhile, appropriate treatment for conjunctivitis should be administered to eliminate latent heat and prevent it from residing in the body.
